Paul Godin

Paul D. Godin is a Toronto-based mediator, lawyer, negotiator, facilitator, trainer, banking ombuds investigator, and ADR systems designer at the Stitt Feld Handy Group/ADR Chambers. He has lectured in Negotiation and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) at the University of Toronto, University of Oregon, and University of Windsor Law Schools and taught contracting principles to project and contract managers. Paul has designed and led more than 350 courses on ADR, Negotiation, and System Design worldwide for organizations including Qantas, BDO, CBC, Scotiabank, TD Bank, Hill & Knowlton, the Trade Union Congress of the Bahamas, Mattel, General Dynamics, INCO, YUM Brands, the judiciary of Trinidad and Tobago, Ontario Power Generation, Alliance Atlantis, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, AECON, AECL, the UN, the Governments of Canada, Australia, Bermuda, Ethiopia, Trinidad & Tobago and others.

Paul articled at Osler Hoskin & Harcourt in Toronto, and began practice in 1997. Prior to joining the Stitt Feld Handy Group in 2001, he practiced law with the Toronto litigation boutique of Rogers Moore, gaining expertise in many areas of law. At the University of Toronto, Paul was the International Bar Association’s Client Counseling Competition World Champion, an award-winning mooter, varsity water polo player, and ABA Negotiation competitor. Prior to law, Paul was a geologist, obtaining a B.A. (Anthropology) and a B.Sc. (Geology) with High Distinction from the University of Toronto, followed by two years of geology post-grad work at the University of Southern California as a ‘NSERC 1967’ Scholar. He received an LL.B. in 1995 from the University of Toronto, where he was on the Dean's List and a scholarship holder.

Paul has acted in many complex mediations and negotiations as a litigator, appearing before the Ontario Courts, the Ontario Court of Appeal, and the Financial Services Commission of Ontario. He now mediates disputes in insurance, banking, commercial contracts, agriculture, sports, environmental issues, personal injury, professional liability, negligence, and accident benefits. Paul is a roster mediator with ADR Chambers, the Ontario Mandatory Mediation Program-Toronto, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Lausanne), the Ontario Energy Board, the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada, A.A.N.D.C. (Aboriginal Issues), ICOM/WIPO, the Trinidad & Tobago Mediation Board, Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement DR Board, a member of the Civil Roster of Mediate BC, and is designated a Chartered Mediator by the ADR Institute of Canada. He has expertise in contract, sports, labour relations, agriculture, and aboriginal issues. On the Canadian Bar Association’s ADR Section Executive, Paul has played a significant role on Bar task forces making recommendations on the Ontario Commercial Mediation Act, mandatory mediation rules, judicial mediation, employment law reform, insurance mediation, and youth violence. Paul has authored peer-reviewed papers on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, mediation, sports mediation, negotiation, and geology, including “Principles of Negotiation” and “A Practical Guide to Conflict Management System Design” in the Nexus Lexus Alternative Dispute Resolution Practice Manual and “Sport Mediation: Mediating High Performance Sports Disputes” in Harvard Negotiation Journal (In Press, 2017).

Discounts

A 15% discount will apply if 5 or more people register from the same organization, during the same calendar year.

A $150 discount applies if you register for both the ADR and Advanced ADR Workshops at the same time.

Cancellation Policy

A fee of 50% of the Workshop fee will be charged for cancellations made up to two weeks prior to the scheduled date for the workshop. The full fee will be charged for cancellations made less than two weeks prior to the workshop date or if participants fail to attend without notice.

A delegate substitution, with required prerequisites, is welcome, up to the workshop commencement date.

An administrative fee will be charged for a change in workshop dates of $250 + HST for the ADR Workshop, Advanced ADR Workshop, Become A Powerful Negotiator Workshop, Dealing With Difficult People Workshop, Mastering Difficult Conversations in Elder Care and Coaching For A Better Workplace, $500 + HST for the Applied ADR Workshop, and $150 + HST for the Winning Over Irate Customers Workshop, if the change is made in the 8 weeks before the workshop.
